Professional Interests

I am an experienced Executive Director, Non-Executive Director and Chairman. My roles have included:

Executive Chairman of the ownership board of the University of Applied Sciences Europe & HTK Academies
Non-Executive Board Member, Office for Students (the regulator of English Higher Education Providers)
Trustee Regent's University, the leading charitable "not for profit" private University based in London
Non-Executive Director of the innovative UCFB football higher education
Chairman of the Turner Schools (Multi Academy Trust) of which I am a co-founder (a charitable Trust)
A member of the advisory board of WONKHE (the home of Higher Education Policy) and the Higher Education Policy Institute (HEPI).

I was a member of the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) prior to it being wound up at the end of March 2018. I was also the inaugural chairman of the Association of Cost Lawyers Training.

The Minister for Universities appointed me to the International Higher Education Council which overseas the implementation of Government policy in relation to UK Higher Education as an export.

The Lord Chief Justice appointed me to the special advisory board of the Judicial Studies Board to assist with the development and creation of the Judicial College which trains the Judiciary.

The Secretary of State for Education appointed me to the regulatory body of one of the statutory healthcare professions in the UK. I served on the Education Committee, the Audit Committee and the Professional Conduct Committee, serving as Chair in the final conduct hearing case I sat on.

I have served as a School Governor at two schools, one state and one private.

I was included in The Lawyer’s list of “Hot 100 Lawyers”.

I am particularly interested in the use of technology enabled learning and the impact the digital revolution will have on higher education.

Personal Interests

I enjoy most sports, but particularly football, cricket and darts (watching not playing).

I have always been interested in the lives of great leaders and the fascination is really about the qualities of leadership. I have enjoyed reading about the real-life challenges of great leaders, the obstacles they have had to overcome, the doubt they faced and the determination to overcome those doubts and obstacles. This has led me to collect the autobiographies of great leaders and I have a collection of over 1,000 antiquarian books, mainly first editions, detailing the lives of great leaders. I am a frustrated historian; the lives of great leaders hold a lot of lessons for the leaders of the future.

I have always enjoyed walking and like a challenge. I usually drag my best friend, Gary Winterman (Chief Executive, Anglo-European Cargo Transport) with me on these challenges. From Lyke Wake walk to the 100KM walking challenge from London to Brighton. We are both members of the ULTRA walkers club and our aim is to eventually tackle Kilimanjaro. At School I was in a punk band with Gary called "Internal Bleeding", I played bass and was so good that they used to turn my amp off for gigs! I walk in aid of British Red Cross - I have always admired the fact that they are on call to help people of all nationalities/religions when disaster strikes- Britain at its' best!

Musically I have an eclectic taste but my favourite group is AC/DC and favourite song is "Touch too much". The first record I purchased was the Sex Pistol's "Great Rock and Roll Swindle". My favourite film is Star Wars (all of them) and the first film I ever saw was "Jaws" which has created a shark phobia! My favourite musical is Les Miserables, my favourite opera is La Boheme, my favourite book (non-autobiography) is Sophie's World, and my favourite Shakespeare play is Henry V.
